Module 1: How Learning Actually Works

Great teaching starts with understanding how learning actually happens. This module introduces the most important ideas from cognitive science and classroom research. The goal is not theory. The goal is helping students remember more and understand more.

Lesson 1: Working Memory

Working memory is the brain's temporary workspace. Students can only hold a small amount of information at one time. When we overload working memory, learning slows down.

Classroom Application

  • Give instructions in small steps
  • Model one process at a time
  • Avoid unnecessary information
  • Check understanding frequently

Lesson 2: Cognitive Load

Cognitive load is the amount of mental effort required during learning. If the task demands too much thinking at once, students become overwhelmed.

Classroom Application

  • Break complex tasks into chunks
  • Use worked examples
  • Reduce distractions
  • Provide scaffolds when needed

Lesson 3: Long-Term Memory

Long-term memory stores knowledge and skills. Learning occurs when information moves from working memory into long-term memory.

Classroom Application

  • Review previous learning regularly
  • Connect new learning to existing knowledge
  • Provide multiple opportunities to practise

Lesson 4: Retrieval Practice

Students remember more when they actively recall information. Retrieval strengthens memory. Re-reading does not.

Classroom Application

  • Use low-stakes quizzes
  • Ask students to explain concepts
  • Begin lessons with review questions

Lesson 5: Spaced Practice

Learning is stronger when practice occurs over time. Cramming produces short-term gains. Spacing produces lasting learning.

Classroom Application

  • Revisit concepts weekly
  • Mix old and new learning
  • Use cumulative review activities

Key Takeaways

  • Students can only process a limited amount of information at one time.
  • Reducing cognitive load improves learning.
  • Long-term memory is the foundation of expertise.
  • Retrieval practice strengthens learning.
  • Spacing learning improves retention.

Classroom Challenge

Choose one strategy from this module and intentionally use it during your next lesson. Focus on implementation rather than perfection.
